Conferences are behind us. I enjoy meeting with parents and families. As a result of last week's conferences, my study hall sessions have been almost full. Many students are working diligently on bringing up grades before February 24th. The Science Projects are finished, however some students did not complete the assignment. They are welcome to stay after on study hall days and finish their work as well. We took the Interim Assessment Block exams this week. Three days of staying silent for two hours at a time is difficult for anyone. I feel their pain as I like to talk as much as they do. Soon, we will be completing Unit 6 and moving on to Units 7 and 8. Be sure to check the curriculum section to see what we're covering in these units. As usual, extra credit points to any student who reads this in the next week and lets me know you have read it. Deadline is February 10th. Thank you, and have a great week.
I hope you have all had a wonderful three-week vacation. I look forward to seeing the results of your experiments. We will be moving from ratios to percents this week. You will begin working on graphs, charts, and other means of displaying the data you have collected for your science projects. We wll also dissect and explore the workings of a sheep's eye. Homework will begin to be more regular starting this week. I will hold study hall after school on Thursdays this week and next week as we lead up to conferences.
Today, in Math, we worked on creating graphs from ratio tables. Page 361 was submitted for a grade. We are working on the research for our Science Projects. On Monday, we went to the school library to find books and encyclopedia resources for our research. Remember, you must have at least three websites, one book, and one encyclopedia reference in your research. If you read this, comment by December 9, 2016 with your initials and the main idea of your Science Project for a bonus point on homework.
On Friday, a classmate of ours received her award from TODOS Math. She and her family attended an awards ceremony in Palm Springs where she was honored with a certificate and a graphing calculator.
Science Projects began today. All of my Science students will be doing a science project for a majority of their Science grade this trimester. By Thursday, students must have their testable question okayed by both a family member and myself in order to move forward with the process. Next week is spirit week. Every day has a theme. Monday - Tie-dye Tuesday - Flannel Wednesday - Disney Thursday - Superman or Batman Friday - School Spirit Today, in Math and Science, students took tests; a short multiplication test in Math and an assessment on what they could remember about the skeletal and muscular systems. Academic Pentathlon has begun looking at the art and music of World War II. This afternoon, Club de Espanol will be hosting a dance for Dia de los Muertos from 2:40-4:40 in the Multi-purpose room.
Academic Pentathlon is finished with presentations and will begin delving into the curriculum for the program. In science, our dissection is on hold indefinitely due to circumstances beyond my control. We reviewed our content knowledge using the platform Kahoot. We're adding and subtracting decimals in Mathematics. Today, page 265 was corrected and returned to students. Study hall is tomorrow, Tuesday, the 25th, after school. Students can get help with concepts with which they are struggling or work on Mathia at their own pace. There is a dance from 2:30-4:30 in the multi-purpose room on Thursday. All assignments for the first trimester are due by November 3rd.
Today, we did not get to dissect our chicken wings. :-( It will be rescheduled for another date this month. Instead, we worked on Lesson 4.2 - comparing, ordering, estimating, and rounding decimals. Page 250, number 5, the rounding table was turned in as an assignment. Academic Pentathlon finished all but one of our presentations.
Today was a minimum day and I rearranged the students in every class. It was so exciting to see 97% of my students at school today. In Mathematics, students worked on MathiaX. We're finishing up adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions. In Science, students reviewed the bones of the skeletal system (they know quite a few of them now), the function of the muscular and skeletal systems, and three major muscles of the muscular system. Academic Pentathlon (Exploratory) is finishing up their slide presentations and will begin presenting in front of the class tomorrow.
Two days at school without students is starting to feel lonely. I'm really excited to try out all the fun ideas I have gotten during our professional development days.
